Intensive English Language Institute (IELI)

OVERVIEW 

UNT’s IELI is the largest intensive English program in North Texas. Established in 1977, our rigorous standards combined with 38 years of teaching Academic English have enabled us to be accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation since 2000 and recently reaccredited until 2025. 

 

STUDENTS CHOOSE TO STUDY AT IELI BECAUSE IT 

  • offers conditional admission to UNT (no TOEFL or IELTS required) 
  • offers the instruction in academic English needed to study at the university 
  • has high standards and support services to help students prepare for the university 
  • costs much less than other programs

IELI ACADEMIC PROGRAM 

  • Designed for students who will enter U.S. universities at bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral levels 
  • 7 levels of proficiency: beginner through advanced 
  • 23 hours of instruction per week divided into three main courses: 
    • Communication class: listening, reading, speaking, vocabulary, pronunciation 
    • Writing class: grammar, writing, library research 
    • Supplemental courses: computer skills, spelling, listening, speaking, note taking 
  • UNT class observations in level 5 
  • Concurrent enrollment in undergraduate courses in level 6 for qualified students 
  • Elective courses in TOEFL and GRE/GMAT preparation 

STUDENT SERVICES AND CULTURAL PROGRAM 

IELI has an excellent team to provide personal and academic support to all our students. Besides, IELI organizes a rich variety of social and cultural activities to (1) allow students to practice English outside of class, (2) learn about American culture, and (3) appreciate international cultures and diversity. IELI TUITION AND FEES 

The cost of an 8-week program at IELI is $3,250, which includes: 

  • Tuition for up to 23 hours/week at IELI 
  • IELI and UNT fees 
  • Student activities and field trips 
  • Health insurance (mandatory for all international students) 
  • All the books and textbooks for courses 
  • Access to UNT libraries, Recreation Center, Health Center, and other services 
  • Access to IELI Computer Lab 
  • Student advising and support 

IELI’s tuition and fees include everything students will need at IELI and at UNT for 8 weeks with the exception of housing and meals (UNT meal plans are available: http://www.dining.unt.edu/residentmealplans).
