We offer over 60 different academic programs among our College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Engineering and Natural Sciences and College of Health Sciences.

The English Institute of International Students (EIIS)

The English Institute for International Students (EIIS) provides academically oriented English programs for college-bound students at The University of Tulsa. It is the goal of the EIIS to provide international students with the necessary English-language skills and competence to successfully perform at a post-secondary level comparable to their native English-speaking counterparts.

The EIIS is administered within the framework of the University of Tulsa’s Office of International Student Services (ISS), an operation of the Office of Admission, and all classes are taught in campus facilities. All applicants must have been granted conditional admission to the university for the purpose of seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree.

Intensive English Program

The Intensive English Program (English Institute) is organized into five levels of study, ranging from elementary to advanced levels of proficiency. Course sessions are conducted over a period of eight weeks, of which seven are dedicated to in-class instruction. Final exams are given in the eighth week of each session for all levels in order to assess students’ achievement of learning outcomes.

Classes meet weekly, Monday to Friday, for a total of 23 contact hours. Daily classes include instruction in the functional areas of Reading, Writing, Structure (grammar), and the combined skills of Listening and Speaking.

Pathway to Academics Program

The Pathway to Academics Program provides international undergraduate students who are otherwise qualified but whose TOEFL scores are slightly less than 70 the opportunity to be enrolled in prescribed academic coursework while strengthening their language proficiency skills. In this fulltime program students will take English Institute courses focusing on oral and written accuracy and fluency as well as credit bearing academic math and college writing courses.

This semester long program requires students to attend classes that meet weekly from Monday to Friday. Students are given access to the language laboratory classroom outside class hours to continue relevant course work. They will also have the opportunity to participate in conversation practice activities and adjust to campus and community life through social and cultural events.

Scholarships

The University of Tulsa also offers scholarships to international students. The International Leadership Scholarship is offered to well-qualified international applicants. This is a merit-based scholarship based on the student’s academic background as well as extracurricular and leadership experience; and the scholarship can be used towards academic classes. The University of Tulsa scholarships cannot be applied towards the English Institute or the Pathway to Academics program. The award is offered to selected freshmen applicants at the time of admission.

Students must submit a completed application for admission with all the required supporting documents. No additional scholarship application is needed and all qualified applicants are automatically considered.

Award values vary from $4,000 to $14,000 USD. The initial award is for one year and is renewable as long as the student maintains full-time enrollment and a 2.5 cumulative GPA at The University of Tulsa. Eligible students may renew up to three times for a total of four years of study. Early applicants are favorably considered.
