Interview - Yan Jie Lu, Bates Technical College
Yan Jie Lu from China attends Bates Technical College in Tacoma, Washington, where she is a freshman, majoring in Marketing & Business Management.
Why did you decide to enter a U.S. summer program?
Firstly, the United States is a place with diversity, I want to see what the world is like out of my country, the U.S. summer program also helps me to learn some American traditions. Secondly, it is a good chance for me to make friends overseas. Then, the U.S. summer program can help me to improve my English.
How did you choose your summer program?
Bates is the largest technical college in Washington State, and this summer program would give me a chance to know more about the American education system and American culture.
What did you like best?
Instructors are nice and they are really helpful. You can choose your own pace on study.
What did you miss most about home?
I miss my friends and family.
What was your biggest surprise?
The biggest surprise on life in the United States is the freedom and liberty. The biggest surprise on education in the United States is that it is not as hard as what I was thinking of.
How did you handle:
...Language differences?
I practice a lot and just have an open mind to adjusting to a different educational system.
How did your English improve?
The program opened a door to my further study in the United States.
What were your activities?
In weekdays’ afternoons, we visited different places. Some of them were famous tourist attractions like Space Needle while others were just for fun like Wildwaves and the Zoo. We also went to Microsoft and Boeing Company.
I was living in a homestay during the summer program. They were really nice and they sometimes held parties.
How easy or difficult is making friends?
It is easy to make friends in the United States, most people here are nice and have open minds. They are also interested in diverse culture.
How relevant was your U.S. summer program to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?
I want to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and I want to work in an international company in my future. My U.S. summer program is the start of exploring worlds out of China.
What is your advice to other students?
Life is full of adventure, have fun with it. When you are here, enjoy yourself and use your heart to experience the special program.
