Interview - Tsung-Feng (Simon) Ka, Western Washington University
Tsung-Feng (Simon) Kang from Taiwan studies English at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington.
Why did you decide to study in the U.S.A.?
I would like to study for an M.B.A. I want to know what kind of education has created the economic miracles in the U.S.A.
How did you choose your intensive English program?
First of all, the teachers are high quality and the tuition is low compared to other schools, and Western is a famous university. Moreover, the IEP helps students quickly adapt to the new conditions and culture by offering classes of Conversation Partner, Tutor Lab, Grammar Lab, TOEFL Prep Class, Pronunciation, and Phrasal Verb. In particular, they offer an Academic Prep Class, where students attend a regular university class. If you want to make sure that your English is good enough to understand Americans in a regular classroom, this is good way.
What do you like best?
I never thought that exercise could make my brain calm down enough to concentrate on studying English; however, it did. I like going to the Recreation Center for working out and swimming after class.
What do you miss most?
I always think about Taiwanese food. When I came to here, I could not adapt to America food, but now it is getting better.
What was your biggest surprise?
I was surprised by the openness of U.S. education and how students express their opinions during the class. I was also surprised by how students use leisure time. They hang out with their closest friends and bring a potluck or cook dinner together, play sports, and listen to music.
How have you handled:
...Language differences?
Getting involved in the culture is the best way.
...Finances?
I worked first and then came here to study English. But this school is cheaper than others, so I don't really worry that I will spend too much money here.
What are your activities?
The IEP provides many activities to acquaint the students with American life, such as a Seattle Trip, a Ski Trip, a Mariner's baseball game, sports. Sometimes my roommate, Brent, took me swimming in the lake. I often rented a car to go to Seattle with my closest friends for shopping.
How easy is making friends in the U.S.A.?
In class, you may make a lot of American friends to help your English. Also, if you stay in on-campus apartments, your roommate and suite mate may become your best friend.
What is your advice to other students?
If they would like to obtain a global perspective, if they want to get along well with students from other countries, they should go the U.S.A.
