Interview - Orn-usa Suwitheechon, Kansas State University

Why did you decide to study in the U.S.A.?

I am a practicing veterinarian in Thailand. I heard that the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University, in Manhattan, which is near Topeka, provided very good instruction in Clinical Sciences, and had very good lab facilities.

How did you choose your intensive English program?

I wanted to study in graduate school, but first I wanted to improve my English.

What do you like best?

The teachers in the English Language Program are very kind. They give me a lot of knowledge. The weather here is beautiful. There is no pollution. There are only two seasons in my country: hot and hotter! So, I really like the four seasons and the cool weather here.

What do you miss most?

I miss my family and my three dogs and one cat.

How has your English improved?

My listening and speaking have improved, and I understand a lot more idioms. I understand more about U.S. culture. English is the foundation for my further graduate studies.

What was your biggest surprise?

People in the U.S. are very informal. Students can wear what they want to class. Also, here students can talk to their professor like a friend.

How have you handled:
...Language differences?

I have to practice speaking a lot. I have two American conversation partners, one set up by the English Language Program, and one set up by the International Student Center. I also ask the teachers a lot of questions.

...Finances?

The cost of living is higher in general here than in Thailand, but cars, appliances, and computers are much cheaper to own and operate here. I planned ahead and saved money before I came.

What are your activities?

I love going to the KSU Recreation Center. I also join the activities of the KSU Thai Student Association.

How is your U.S. education relevant to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

My goals are: 1) To be a Special Lecturer in a Thai university, 2) To establish an animal foundation for solving the problem of homeless animals in Thailand, 3) To develop new theraputic techniques to be used in animal hospitals. My graduate study here will help me to reach my goals.

What is your advice to other students?

Save your money and have a plan about what you want to study, and what you want to develop in your own country when you go back home.
