Interview - Jung Hwan Hyun, Benedictine College

Why did you decide to study in the U.S.A.?

Actually, the most important reason was learning English.

How did you choose your university?

U.S. News & World Report selected Benedictine College as one of “America’s Best Colleges 2009.” Most of all, the international education center helps me a lot.

What do you like best?

Benedictine College is in Atchison, a quiet and peaceful city. I think this is the best surrounding for study. Plus, the students are very kind and funny.

What do you miss most about home?

I am here for learning English and my major, and I’m not good at English yet. Therefore, I miss my language; I mean, conversation without difficulty.

How has your English improved?

My English has improved better than I expected. The ESL classes help me in a variety of courses — reading, writing, listening, speaking and even introducing the American culture! When I am stuck in a problem about class, a tutor helps me.

What was your biggest surprise?

In Korea, there are many students in one class, about 20 students. But not in here. There are fewer students in each class. Therefore, I can have many chances to ask questions. I am really satisfied.

How have you handled language differences?

When I write or speak about something, I try not to translate from my first language. I always try to speak from thought to mouth directly. And I watch lots of movies made in the USA, with subtitles. They help me a lot.

What are your activities?

A couple of weeks ago, I gave a presentation about Korea. I introduced traditional food and activities at the Asian New Year Party. I invited my friends who live in the same dorm where I live. At that party, I could make more friends. It was fantastic.

How is your U.S. education relevant to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

My career goal is to be a producer in broadcasting. My major, mass communications, will improve my professional knowledge. Moreover, most companies in Korea require an applicant to use English well. I think education at Benedictine might help me a lot in the future.

What is your advice to other students?

When I arrived in the USA, everything was unfamiliar. I missed my family and friends a lot. However, after a week, everything had changed. I had lots of friends who made me fun and happy. They helped me to adapt to the U.S.A. and college. Most of all, the speed of improving English is unbelievably faster than studying English in Korea. Don’t be shy, and try it. I bet you can do it.
