Academics
At the Brooklyn Campus you can choose from a variety of majors including the Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Health Professions, Pharmacy and Nursing. The 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio allows you to communicate and to interact with your peers and with faculty members. The Campus’ exceptional Honors program, dedicated faculty, and professional academic advising and counseling programs provide you with the level of guidance and academic support needed to ensure success.
New York City - an ideal place to pursue an education
No matter what your area of interest –you will have a unique advantage studying at the Brooklyn Campus. Wall Street, the financial capital of the world, is just a short subway ride away. World-renowned museums, galleries and theaters are located in the surrounding neighborhood and throughout the New York metropolitan area. The Campus also has affiliations with some of the top hospitals, health care facilities and pharmaceutical companies in the world.
Living in Brooklyn
The Brooklyn Campus does provide students with the opportunity to reside on campus; however, housing is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Many students take advantage of the surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods and easy access to the Campus via the NYC subway and bus systems.
International Student Support
The International Student Office assists international students with immigration requirements for study in the United States. Each semester a special orientation session is offered to explain and answer questions about the latest Immigration and Naturalization Service rules. The office also hosts an annual trip to see a New York City landmark as part of the orientation. Additionally, international students are provided with an up-to-date handbook of INS information and University policy.
The Brooklyn Campus is also host to the English Language Institute which is one of the largest and most-respected English programs in New York City. Students will encounter experienced, professional teachers with advanced degrees in English language education, a state-of-the-art multimedia language laboratory, Intensive, Semi-Intensive and Specific Skills courses, semi-private tutoring at a nominal fee.
NCAA Division I Athletic Programs
The Brooklyn Campus boasts a nationally recognized Division I athletic program representing the NEC Conference. Male and female student-athletes are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of sports. The athletic program includes men’s baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, track and field, and cross country; and women’s basketball, bowling, golf, lacrosse, softball, soccer, tennis, track and field, cross country and volleyball. Many of our international students excel playing team sports.
Social activities on campus
As a Brooklyn Campus student, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a variety of student-centered programs including: Student Government Association (SGA); Residence Hall Council; evening intramurals programs; Seawanhaka, the student newspaper; Sound, the yearbook; WLIU Radio; and LIU-TV. Over 45 clubs are available to students including Alpha Lambda Delta and the National Freshman Honor Society, in addition to a multitude of ethnic organizations such as: the Hillel Jewish Student Club, the Muslim Students Club, the Vietnamese Students Association, the Bangladesh Students Association and African Students United, which offer an outlet for personal expression and a place to explore group identity as well.
Wellness and Recreation
Students who enroll at the Brooklyn Campus also enjoy access to the new $45 million, 112,000-square-foot Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center, which provides state-of-the-art athletic facilities for students and other members of the Campus community. It features tennis courts, a running track, an eight-lane swimming pool, a therapy pool, two weight rooms, an aerobics room and a 17,000-square-foot basketball arena. You’ll also be able to relax in the park-like setting of the newly landscaped courtyard surrounding the world-class Kumble Theater and the Humanities Art Gallery located in the center of the Brooklyn Campus. Other key facilities include our four-story library, various student lounges, the new Cyber Café, and the historic Luntey Commons, part of the former Brooklyn Paramount Theater.
