English Language Institute

The English Language Institute (www.eli.cmich.edu) provides courses in English as a second language (ESL) for non-degree students, as well as CMU degree seeking students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students receive cultural training and language skills required to succeed in an American university, as well as American society.

The ELI provides two programs of study. The Intensive Program is a full-time, English only program for conditionally admitted students who have no TOEFL scores, TOEFL scores below 61 iBT, or non-degree students who just want to improve language skills. The Dual Program is an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program for conditionally admitted, degree seeking students who have either completed the ELI Intensive Program or have submitted TOEFL scores between 61 and 78 iBT. Students in this program are generally allowed to take some CMU degree courses while completing their ELI Dual Program requirements.

IELTS scores are also accepted in place of the TOEFL. Learn more online, at www.eli.cmich.edu

Undergraduate Degree Programs

CMU takes a holistic view of student applications. For admission, we carefully consider each candidate in many areas, including: overall grade point average; entrance exam scores; rigor of high school courses; extra-curricular and leadership activities; work experience; and volunteer service. You should apply for admission as soon as possible - preferably within the first few weeks of your final year in high school. For a complete list of academic programs and student life information, please visit our web site at www.oie.cmich.edu.

Graduate Degree Programs

CMU offers more than 70 graduate degree programs at the master’s, specialist, and doctoral levels. For a complete list and downloadable information materials, please visit our web site at www.grad.cmich.edu.

CMU’s College of Graduate Studies has a proud tradition of academic excellence. Students enjoy flexible graduate program plans and convenient classrooms and schedules. They especially appreciate the friendly atmosphere and close access to faculty mentors and student services.

Graduate admission to CMU requires a minimum TOEFL score of 79 on the Internet-based exam. Conditional admission is possible with slightly lower TOEFL scores. If you score 500-547 (paper-based), 173-210 (computer-based), or 61-78 (Internet-based), you may be granted conditional admission, if all other admission requirements are met. We also accept IELTS, with a score of 6.5 (minimum) or 5.5/ 6.0 (conditional).

Students who do not meet the minimum score requirements for TOEFL or IELT are eligible only for admission to the CMU English Language Institute, and students must apply separately. Learn more online, at www.cmich.edu/international.
