The English Language & Training Academy (ELTA) at American University 

ELTA offers an intensive, full-time program for students who wish to improve their English language skills while becoming closely oriented with American culture. ELTA provides:

  • High quality English instruction in a diverse, student-centered classroom.
  • Four levels of instruction from high intermediate to advanced.
  • 18 hours of instruction per week
  • Guest lectures, workshops, conversation partners with AU students, and site visits into Washington, DC.
  • On-campus housing available during the summer; off-campus housing assistance available all year.

Program Schedules

Students can choose from a number of flexible study options. All schedules are designed to meet each student's individual goals and effectively prepare them for future work, study, or general communication in English. 

  • Fall Semester
    Late August – December (14/15 weeks)
  • Spring Semester
    Early January – mid-May (14 weeks)
  • Summer Semester
    Early June – early August (10 weeks)  -  Early June- early July (5 weeks)

Tuition and Additional Costs

  • Tuition for one semester is $7,200 in the fall and spring. 
  • Tuition for the 10-week summer semester is $5,400, and it is $2,700  for the 5-week summer semester.
  • AU Health insurance costs approximately $470 in the summer and $800 in the fall or spring (per semester)

Students in level 3 take two core courses: Reading, Writing & Grammar and Listening & Speaking. Students in  levels 4, 5, and 6  take three unique courses: Writing and Grammar, Academic Discussion, Reading and Vocabulary. They also take a forth course such as Life and Culture in Washington, DC, American Film and Culture Studies, and American TV and Culture Studies. These are all interdisciplinary courses that aim to strengthen all English language skills and deepen students’ understanding of the nation’s exciting capital city. 

Admissions Requirements

All applicants must be at least 18 years old and a graduate of high school/secondary school. In order to attend ELTA, students must provide:

  • Online application form
  • $200 deposit to American University
  • Copy of a valid passport
  • Evidence of financial support

About American University

American University is a private university located in one of northwest Washington, DC's most beautiful residential areas. It offers 69 bachelor’s degrees, 73 master’s degrees, 11 doctoral degrees, and a JD program, as well as 72 certificate programs at both the graduate and undergraduate level. The student body is globally diverse, with students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 140 countries worldwide. In 2014 the total enrollment was 13,061. 


ELTA instructors are both dedicated and highly qualified, with Master’s Degrees or post-graduate certificates in English language education or related fields and teaching experience in the United States and abroad. 


American University is approximately one mile from the Tenleytown/AU Metro station, which is easily accessible by the free AU shuttle. AU is located on “Embassy Row,” and is within minutes of Washington DC’s most popular sites. The closest airport is Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), which is about 25 minutes by car and on the Metro.
