Program Overview
The International English Center (IEC) offers a unique opportunity to learn the English language in a stimulating academic atmosphere. The year-round intensive English program, fully accredited by CEA, features English instruction, combined with orientation to university customs, academic preparation, and an introduction to life in the United States. There are 5 eight-week sessions. The summer session features a second intake providing a four-week program for those with limited time. Students are tested on arrival and placed in classes appropriate to their proficiency in English.
Curriculum
The curriculum is particularly suitable for students who are preparing to enter a college or university in the United States, but it is also suitable for others simply interested in improving their English through intensive study. Classes are offered at eight proficiency levels, Introductory, Basic 1 and 2, Intermediate 1, 2 and 3, and Advanced 1 and 2. In 20 hours of class work each week, attention is given to all the language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and to the study skills necessary for undergraduate and graduate work in universities in the United States. Ample time is given in classes for communication practice in English and on the academic skills necessary for the new TOEFL iBT. Opportunities are provided for students at the advanced level to participate in an academic course at the university.
Faculty
Our instructors are professional, experienced teachers who specialize in the teaching of English as a second language. They have M.A. or Ph.D. degrees, are native or near-native speakers, and have taught English around the world.
Computer Labs+
We have two computer labs with Internet access and Microsoft Office Suite and an audio lab with many materials available for student use.
After-Class Activities at the IEC
We feel it is important for students to enjoy recreational activities outside the classroom. Students have opportunities to meet and socialize with conversation partners. In addition, we regularly host various activities such as parties, movies, field trips, cultural and sporting events, and one all-day activity per session such as skiing, horseback riding and hiking in the mountains, and white-water rafting.
