The American Language Institute (ALI) of San Francisco
State University is one of the oldest, most respected intensive
English programs in the country. Since 1961, we have been
offering a rigorous program of language training that stresses
academic skills and university preparation for students from all
around the world.
San Francisco is known as "America's Favorite City,"
famous for its great beauty and sophisticated international atmosphere.
Within a single day you can reach most important business, social,
and tourist attractions of California.
The curriculum is primarily designed to give students intensive
preparation in the skills necessary for American university study.
It is also useful for individuals who want to improve their language
skills for business purposes. The 22 hour per week program includes
courses in reading and writing, oral communication skills (listening
and speaking), grammar, cross-cultural communication, and TOEFL preparation.
Classes are intended for serious, mature and self-directed students
with academic or professional goals. The ALI also offers supplemental TOEFL Preparation courses on Fridays for a small fee of $165.
The ALI offers four proficiency levels: low intermediate
(TOEFL 325 and above) to advanced (TOEFL 520-600). Institutional
TOEFL tests are offered at the beginning and end of each semester.
Please note that the ALI does not have a beginning level
course. All students should have had some formal study of English
before applying to the program.
Special conditional admission to San Francisco State University
is provided for qualified students, and all students receive substantial
assistance in applying to colleges and universities.
All campus facilities are available to ALI students, including sports facilities, library, computer and language labs.
The ALI offers a regular program of social activities,
such as movie nights, parties, weekend field trips, etc.
The ALI also features a Conversation Group program and a Conversation Partner program that pairs ALI students with American university students.
The ALI is a small program, offering lots of individual attention
from teachers and advisors. Class sizes range from 12-20, with
average size between 15-18, taught by a highly-trained, internationally
recognized teaching staff. A full-time advising staff offers
guidance and assistance with immigration, academic and personal
problems.
There are three semesters per year. Dates for 2012
are:
Spring 2012: February 8, 2012 - May 11, 2012 (12 weeks of instruction)
Summer 2012: May 30, 2012 - August 10, 2012 (10 weeks of instruction)
Fall 2012: September 5, 2012-December 7, 2012 (12 weeks of instruction)
Books: approximately $150; living expenses: (housing,

and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP) and American Association
