UCLA Extension, the continuing education division of UCLA, offers a prestigious education in an exciting metropolitan city. At UCLA Extension, international students can either enroll in full-time intensive English language programs at the American Language Center (ALC) or full-time certificate programs in a variety of fields. All courses and programs take place on and/or near the park-like UCLA campus in Westwood Village.

English Language Programs at the American Language Center (ALC)

UCLA Extension's American Language Center (ALC) provides students with superior English language instruction. Our well-trained and experienced instructors use the most up-to-date teaching methods and create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in which students learn not only to communicate in their new language but also learn more about American life and culture.

The ALC offers an outstanding variety of full-time year-round intensive English courses for academic purposes, practical communication, or business. Support services include visa advising, housing information, and academic counseling. International students also enjoy use of the UCLA campus, including athletic facilities, museums, and cultural programs.

ALC also works closely with an independent tour company that organizes excursions to popular California and Southwest destinations, such as San Francisco, San Diego, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, and weekend ski trips to nearby mountains or to the desert.

Certificate Programs

UCLA Extension offers more than 50 certificate programs for professional development which meet the requirements for full-time international study.

Certificate programs benefit professionals who wish to advance in their current fields or change careers, as well as students who are just beginning their professional lives. Taught by industry experts, courses emphasize practical experience and work-related applications. International students study side-by-side with Los Angeles residents.

When you complete a qualified UCLA Extension certificate program, you may be eligible to apply for Optional Practice Training (OPT), and work and be paid for one year, an experience that advances your career and impresses employers worldwide. Many students are able to obtain work through networking with their instructors and fellow students, most of whom are working professionals.

Most programs require a TOEFL score between 79 and 100 (iBT) or an IELTS score between 6.5 and 7; some require an iBT score of 100 or an IELTS score of 7. Students who fall below the required score are welcome to continue their English language studies at the American Language Center, and letters of conditional admission are available for American Language Center students who wish to enter UCLA Extension certificate programs.
