rafting, and mountain sports. CSUB, a safe and friendly campus of
7,900, has a new library and small classes. The Intensive English
Language Center (IELC) prepares the student with the skills needed
for study in American universities.
Intensive English Language Center Program
The Intensive English Language Center (IELC), located on the campus of
California State University, Bakersfield, is an intensive American English
language program designed to prepare undergraduate and graduate students for
successful academic study in the United States. The non-credit program offers
courses in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, including pronunciation.
In addition, classes are also offered in grammar, American Culture, vocabulary,
academic study skills, including TOEFL preparation. I-20's are issued for
study in the program. IELC, also, welcomes persons who want to improve their
English for professional or personal reasons.
High school graduates with two years of English language study are eligible to
apply for the program. Four sessions are offered throughout the year with
23 hours of instruction per week.
In addition, specialized programs can be designed for business and special
interest groups according to their language needs and schedule. These courses
are most beneficial to businesses, especially oil and agriculture.
The faculty of IELC are experienced teachers with special training in English
as a Second Language. All teachers are supportive and understanding of the
needs and cultural differences of the students.
Housing
Students may participate in the center's homestay program. Living with an
American host family allows the students to practice and improve their English
skills quickly while learning about American lifestyles and culture. A limited
number of rooms are available in the campus dormitories and off-campus
apartments are available within walking distance of the campus. Bakersfield
offers quality housing at affordable prices.
University
California State University, Bakersfield is one of 23 campuses in the
California State University system, the largest university system in the world.
With a student population of 7,900, CSUB offers small classes, providing
quality instruction and individual attention to student interests and needs.

The university offers 37 Baccalaureate degrees, including business
administration, accounting, child development, nursing, and a strong
pre-engineering program. Twenty-three Master's degree programs are also offered.

Application Procedures
To apply for admission to the Intensive English Language program the
following is needed:
- Signature of sponsor and proof of financial support.
- A certified copy of all secondary or university transcripts translated in
English.
- A copy of current picture passport page, showing applicant's name, birth date, country of birth, and passport expiration date.
- Application fee of $100.00 U.S. dollars in the form of a bank draft or
international money order payable to the Intensive English Language Center.
The one-time fee is non-refundable.

When all necessary materials are received and approved, an acceptance package and I-20 will be
sent. New students should arrive in the United States at least 2-3
days before classes start for registration and orientation.
Admission to the Intensive English Language Center does not guarantee
regular admission to the University or its courses and programs.
