*Academic Ranking of World Universities
AECP is centrally located on the ASU Tempe campus. Tempe has been rated by the New York Times as one of the top ten college towns in the U.S. AECP students have direct access to student resource centers, computer technology centers, recreational centers, classroom buildings and campus events.
Classes are offered in eight-week sessions. There are five sessions offered each year. Students enroll in the number of sessions necessary to achieve the desired level of English proficiency. There are six levels of English offered, from basic to advanced. It takes one full session (eight weeks) to complete a level.
Full-time students study 21 hours per week, which includes two core courses in listening/speaking and reading/writing, and an elective course. More than 40 elective courses are offered and can be taken to earn special Professional English Certificates.
ASU offers conditional admission to international undergraduate applicants who meet the academic requirement but whose TOEFL or IELTS score does not meet the minimum English language proficiency requirement. Through conditional admission, students must successfully complete the highest English level in ASU’s American English and Culture Program (AECP).
Students who complete AECP’s Advanced 2 level with a grade of “A” or “B” may enter an undergraduate or graduate degree program without TOEFL scores (unless the degree program has a special or higher requirement).
The Certificate of Completion is awarded to those who have successfully completed their courses. In addition, AECP offers six Professional English Certificates to students who complete elective courses in particular areas: Academic English Certificate, Science and Technology Certificate, Business English Certificate, Communication Certificate, Fundamentals of English Certificate, and American Culture Studies Certificate.
AECP has a full-time student advisor to help students with orientation, immigration counseling, and the admission process to one of ASU’s 500 degree programs.
The average AECP class size is 15 students.
All AECP teachers have at least a master’s degree in teaching English as a second language or a related field, and many have overseas teaching experience.
AECP students have several housing options that allow for interaction with Americans, including on-campus dormitories, American family home stays and near-campus apartments.
AECP partners with universities, companies, governments and international organizations to offer specialized group programs designed to meet specific needs and schedules.
AECP students experience a full range of program-sponsored trips and activities to experience American culture, Arizona and ASU. Activities include field trips to the Grand Canyon and Sedona, museums, picnics, professional sporting events, conversation clubs and many more.
